Lead Compositor

Location: London/Hybrid

Type: Full-time

The role.

Be a part of a agile team that creates real impact. You will work closely with the VFX supervisor and other film creatives and HoDs, to establish and deliver the final look of the film. As Compositing Supervisor you lead the final look and compositing solutions. You will be hands-on in any necessary software. Create technical solutions and workflows. To make sure that our technical approach maintains the expected look and quality of the film. You will  mentor and guide the team. Monitor shots and delivery. You will explore new (often unconventional) methods, research and implement the latest  AI solutions—depth/relight, smart mattes, Wan 2.5 Animate, Gaussian splats.  You will be required to publish procedural, modular tools others rely on.

What you’ll do:

  • Composite complex/hero shots in Nuke (or any nessesary software) to final.

  • Match live-action plates: lighting, perspective, grain, lens, and timing.

  • Use clean plate and restoration skills for paint/roto/fixes.

  • Build robust Nuke templates and tools for reuse across sequences.
  • Work with Supervisors to plan bids, schedules, and reviews.

Future-thinking & Hands-on.

  • Use ML/automation in comp where it helps: Nuke CopyCat, smart roto, Comfi UI depth/relight aids.

  • Contribute procedural, modular scripts and gizmos that other artists can pick up.

  • Help us evaluate new tools (e.g., depth estimation, matte generation, denoise/upscale).

  • Aim for one-change-many-shots workflows. (DNEG highlights the growing use of machine learning and automation in comp for speed and consistency.  )

What you bring:

  • Strong Nuke skills and a reel that shows invisible work.

  • Solid grasp of technical compositing fundamentals, keying, projections, re-lighting in comp, deep ect.

  • Understanding the internal workings of nodes, tools and workflows to achieve the expected visual result.

  • The ability to accurately translate creative notes to technical execution.

  • Colour literacy: ACES/OCIO, IDT/ODT awareness, show LUTs, plate parity.

  • Editorial sense: Understanding of editorial principles.

  • Exposure to AI video tools or dataset prep.

  • Calm communication and clean notes.

Nice to have:

  • On-set awareness: HDRI capture, lens grids, witness cams, survey basics.

  • Scripting: Python/TCL.

  • Experience mentoring peers or leading small shot pods.

Growth at KOALAFX:

  • Faster growth opportunity: We are looking for individuals who aim for faster growth than traditional VFX companies. Step into sequence-lead, then 2D lead and VFX Sup.

  • Hands-on R&D time: Try new comp/ML tools and experience new technologies.

  • Tool ownership: publish studio-level templates and maintain them.

  • Cross-department learning: lighting/FX/lookdev sessions to deepen film sense.

(Comparable studios frame growth via mentorship, ownership, and cross-team collaboration; we mirror that with a faster, hands-on track).

Filmmaking first

You think like a filmmaker. You read performance and lens choices. You know when to stop. Your work plays clean in the grade and reads as photographed.
